Read this before the rates below. Labor Day weekend starts Saturday, and the run-up to a long weekend is the most predictable spike on the freight calendar: shippers push loads out ahead of the holiday, drivers want to be home, and rail ramps run reduced schedules Monday the 7th. Expect truckload rates to increase Thursday and Friday, and plan on the Monday closure pushing next week's pickups and deliveries back a day.
This week's read: Truckload split, and the split has a shape. The Northeast to Gulf corridor tightened in both directions: NJ to Houston up $505 and Houston to NJ up $405. The long backhauls into New Jersey went the other way: Alameda to NJ off $665, New Orleans to NJ off $400, and NJ to Seattle off $655. Houston to Alameda also gave back $340. The one big West Coast increase is Seattle to NJ, up $715.
Rail was quiet, up $30 to $140 on eight of ten lanes, with Houston to Alameda the only decline. Rail still beats truck by $1,100 to $3,700 on every lane out of New Jersey and Baltimore and on both Pacific to New Jersey backhauls, so if your coffee can wait out the holiday, book the train. Houston to NJ and New Orleans to NJ are the exceptions where truck is the cheaper move.
