This week's read: Fuel is the story. The fuel component inside truckload spot rates stepped up about 15 percent since our last index, and on a 2,900-mile lane that alone is worth roughly $270 per load. Add a firmer West Coast outbound market and the long Pacific to New Jersey backhauls are the big movers: Alameda to NJ up $670 and Seattle to NJ up $515. Baltimore outbound firmed too, RPM Sparrows Point to Alameda up $315 and to Portland up $290. Houston to NJ is up $195. Where the market softened, NJ to Seattle, Houston to Alameda, Alameda to Portland, Seattle to Alameda, we held last week's number rather than chase it down for a week and back up the next, so those lanes show flat.
Rail moved $40 to $185 on eight of ten lanes and held flat on both Baltimore lanes. Rail still beats truck by $1,300 to $3,600 on every lane out of New Jersey and Baltimore and on both Pacific to New Jersey backhauls. Houston to NJ and New Orleans to NJ remain the exceptions where truck is the cheaper move. One scheduling note: on this week's quote pass, Tuesday rail pickups out of New Jersey were sold out on every lane. Book rail out of the Northeast two to three days ahead.
